RESILIENCE…

The concept is a driving force for us social workers and is one of the foundations of a strengths-based approach to our work. The word alone emits strength and hope, but doesn’t minimize the very real challenges individuals, organizations and communities face each day, from personal grief to institutional racism.  Rather, it is about being present enough to muster the strength to utilize skills to confront struggles. Building resilience is an ongoing process. Much has been studied and there are many tools available to help nurture this growth.  And for helping professionals, it’s a parallel process for ourselves and our clients/organizations.  It’s about integrating the PROTECTIVE FACTORS that reduce the effects of stressful life events.  It’s about learning to help ourselves and others REGULATE their RESPONSE TO STRESS in order to RECOVER. It’s about ADJUSTING to some life situations and FINDING NEW POSSIBILITIES. It’s about developing RESOURCES and utilizing CONNECTIONS and SUPPORTS. It’s about seeking ways to engage in OPTIMISM amidst strife and finding HOPE.
