End-of-Life Doula Services: Supporting the dying and their families—
“Not just hand holding (but that too)”
Sometimes, what appears nothing short of miraculous, the lives of patients with degenerative or terminal illnesses are extended through ever improving medical protocols. But as end-of- life nears for them, quality-of-life is often lacking, at a time when it is critically needed.
Non-medical, end-of-life compassionate care can augment hospice or palliative care and enhance quality-of-life for the patient and family. Every patient deserves to have people willing and able to help them and their loved ones approach the dying part of their life in a way that is meaningful to them.
An End-of-Life Doula can be that resource, enabling family members to focus on their loved one. From facilitating difficult conversations that could support family functioning to providing guidance on saying goodbye or planning and sitting vigil, doulas can assist families through this journey. Whether it is through tele-visits, in the patient’s home, hospital, hospice, or nursing home, the companionship offered can provide a safe space for the patient and their family, to reflect on their end-of-life wishes.
